The Israeli archaeological authority announced the discovery of the remains of a 1,300-year-old church near Mount Tabor, the biblical Mount of Transfiguration, where according to Christian tradition Jesus began to shine with rays of light and spoke with the prophets Moses and Elias.
The village of Kfar Kama stands near the site today, where the church was discovered during an archaeological excavation prior to the construction of a municipal playground.
As explained by archaeologist Nurit Feig, from the Israel Antiquities Authority (AAI) and director of the excavation, the building is about 430 square meters and has a large patio and a lobby.
Unlike other constructions of this type, this church had three apses instead of one. Other notable elements are its mosaics, a small stone reliquary to preserve sacred objects and a colorful decoration that incorporates geometric shapes and blue, black and red floral patterns.
According to a statement released today by the AAI, a series of rooms adjacent to the church were also discovered, which will continue to be excavated and which could be remains of a monastery.
This discovery emphasizes the importance of the Christian village established in the Byzantine period near Mount Tabor, where according to Christian tradition Jesus was transfigured.
«And about eight days after these words, Jesus took Peter, John, and James with him and went up on the mountain to pray. And as she prayed, the appearance of her face became bright, and her dress white and shining. And here are two men who were talking with him, which were Moses and Elijah, who appeared surrounded by glory«, Collects the Gospel according to Saint Luke.
